Our reality moves by the action of two very different forces, one of them follows the order of logic and time, the other the rules of the unconscious. Desire moves us from the depths of our guts, driven by biology and natural selection. The desire is irrational, urgent, imperative. It appears in an animal and instinctive way when what is at stake is the survival of the person or the species. It is imposed tyrannically and subdues us when we fall in love or have some kind of dependency. It is expressed in the form of uncontrollable attraction, irrational aversion, impulsiveness and excess. Desire leads us to lay down our lives for others, to end others' or our own. Freud spoke of Eros and Thanatos as the forces of life and death, creation and destruction, the beginning and the end of things.
